MIS pulls off Reading Brigade for non-readers

Pursuant to DM No. 285, s. 2020, the Mabulitec Integrated School (MIS) carried out the 2020 Reading Brigade for Non-readers on October 28, 2020 to rekindle the interest of the school children in reading despite of difficulties. As declared by the Department of Education the month of November as the National Reading Month, the Schools Division Office I Pangasinan spearheaded by Dr. Sheila Marie A. Primicias, CESO VI enjoined all Public Elementary and Secondary Schools to conduct a Reading Brigade to all learners. This activity aimed at identifying learners who are non-readers or non-decoders in English, aligning programs, projects, and activities to the assessed needs, implementing the need-based interventions, and giving awards to the best reading performers. In connection to this, Dr. Christine M. Paglingayen, MIS Principal, coordinated the activity with the School English Coordinators which then disseminated to all concerned teachers. Said activity has been conducted to Grade Two to Six learners in the Elementary Department while Grade Seven to 12 in the Secondary. Reading videos with Level I and Level II were sent to learners who have gadgets at home while books and printed reading materials containing alphabets, beginning and ending consonant digraphs and others for those who do not have any gadget at home. A certain passage was also given to secondary learners which read by paragraph. Learners who were able to read the alphabet sounds proceeded to Level II while those who were not able to read any are identified as non-readers. Those who proceeded to Level II and attained 75% and above mastery of the lesson will undergo enhancement program while those who attained 74% and below will undergo reading remediation. Non-readers will automatically undergo reading remediation. With the consolidated reading report, MIS designed a project to be implemented in the school and it is named as READ Alert with a Theme: “ Shaping learners’ future through enhanced reading program.” This project aimed at helping the learners to read and improve their reading ability and having a decreased number of non-readers or zero non-reader by the end of the school year. All concerned teachers had their schedule in conducting the reading remediation and enhancement program for their learners.
